Abstract

The polymorphism of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773), an introduced coccinellid beetle found in the central and southern coast of Peru, was presented in this investigation. Avocado, citrus and other crop farms were visited in Lima and Ica. Manual sampling of adult specimens of H. axyridis was carried out, using entomological nets, a lethal chamber, glass vials and 70% ethanol. The assemblage, labeling, pictures and diagrams drawn were done in a laboratory using stereoscope, digital camera and laptop. The results obtained demonstrated color variation in adult specimens; from pale orange to intense red with ten spots defined in each elytron or less by fusion of obliteration. There were differences in size and intensity, pronotal “M” mark was complete or incomplete, but not obliterated. Previous studies from other authors suggest that the predominance of certain forms is related to mate selection by females, among other factors, such as season, behavior and chemical communication. Five color variants were identified in H. axyridis for the Peruvian coast and a new report has been made, which expands the distribution of this species to the town of Los Aquijes, Ica.
