University extension is an essential function of the university that seeks to connect academic knowledge with society and transform the territory in which it is located. In Latin America, it has been the subject of study and discussion from different perspectives, highlighting its importance in social and territorial development. This bibliographic review addresses university extension as a tool for transforming the territory in the region, emphasizing the construction of community and citizen participation in extension projects, and questioning its current scope and challenges. It highlights the importance of promoting citizen participation, diversity, and critical approaches in extension projects to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable transformation of the territory in Latin America.
