Science and technology have allowed, not only instant communication, via the Internet or through different devices, but also the emergence of social networks that bring together millions of followers in the world according to their interests. Consequently, social networks can play a great role in the educational process. In this context, this article shows the results of a research that was aimed at determining to what extent students and professors of the Universidad de Panama’s 19 schools use these social networks for academic purposes. The technique applied to obtain information was a survey administered to 156 students and 37 teachers inquiring them on how they use social networks for academic purposes. The main results reveal that both students and teachers use these tools daily. However, it was discovered that students use them mostly for personal purposes, while teachers for teaching purposes.
