Abstract

Parentalization refers to the distortion of boundaries between family subsystems, where children assume roles and responsibilities that are usually reserved for adults. Recent studies have highlighted the influence that this type of childhood experiences can have on the future personal and social relationships of individuals. To characterize the parentalization process experienced by university students during school childhood, according to grade level and predominant factors. An exploratory-descriptive quantitative methodology was used. Lisa Hooper's Parentalization Inventory, validated in 2009, was applied. A sample of 546 Ecuadorian university students was used. 100% of the students investigated presented some degree of parentalization, with 72.2% standing out with a medium degree according to the general scale. The parentalization factor related to perceived benefits was the most representative among the respondents, which means that most of them do not feel that they have been affected by having exercised roles that did not correspond to them during their childhood. This study contributes relevant information to the incipient exploration of the parentalization construct in the Ecuadorian context, where the assignment of roles to the members of the family system has an important sociocultural component and it is necessary to deepen its impact on the harmonious development of the personality.
