Abstract

The seroprevalence of the Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) was determined in backyard chickens flocks from districts located in central provinces of Panama. The results of 460 samples of animals, collected in 2017, of both sexes, from 27 counties of 20 districts, located in Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos and Veraguas, subjected to tests of seroprevalence of antibodies against the IBV were gived by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). For the tests, commercial enzyme immunoassay kits (IDEXX IBV Ab ELISA) were used. An analysis of the lexicon of the scientific publications registered in the last 20 years was also carried out and the location of the national parks was recorded. The results show the first serological evidence of the presence of IBV in backyard chikcken flocks in Panama. The high seroprevalence indexes and their heterogeneity among the districts evaluated are also shown. These districts maintain a close geographic relationship with the presence of national parks, which could cause greater damages in technically advanced poultry farms and the avifauna in the country. It is suggested that studies must be conducted to identify circulating strains and evaluate the economic losses caused by these pathogens, and the costs and benefits of countermeasures.
