Abstract

This work evaluates innovative educational skills, mediated by information and communication technologies (ICT), aimed at the nursing staff of the Cañita Polyclinic, Panama, with the purpose of strengthening their virtual participation in the prevention of childhood obesity. A qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted to understand and strengthen the educational competencies of nursing staff. The sample consisted of 15 nurses with more than five years of experience in outpatient care. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and direct observation, which allowed for the identification of prior knowledge, perceptions, and practices related to childhood obesity and health education. The findings revealed limitations in the understanding of risk factors, prevalence, and comprehensive approaches to childhood obesity. However, the staff demonstrated a willingness to incorporate technological tools into their professional practice. Based on these results, innovative educational skills were designed and implemented, integrating virtual platforms, infographics, and interactive videos, aimed at fostering active learning and community participation in health. The application of a competency-based approach mediated by ICT constitutes an effective strategy for strengthening the training of nursing staff and enhancing their virtual participation in the prevention of childhood obesity. The results confirm that digital education promotes the acquisition of professional skills, communication with families, and the promotion of healthy habits in the community.
