The objective of this article is to identify the characteristics of Project Based Learning (PBL) as an essential methodology to achieve meaningful learning at the graduate level at the José Martí University of Latin America. It arose from the need to train researchers in a doctoral program. Observations were made and the main criteria for evaluating difficulties present in previous training were systematized to design courses based on PBL that contribute to the formation of investigative skills through knowledge construction processes through the scientific method, applied to problem solving. in specific contexts. It contributes to the dissemination of a proposal for curricular updating connected to the competency-based training model, the application of which is recommended in all subjects and at all educational levels.
