Abstract

A Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) was carried out to identify the main problems faced in the Embera communities of Marraganti and Villa Caleta, Republic of Panama. In the first stage, working groups were set up and induction was given to the participants, so they could identify their main problems through a group discussion and present in the plenary session. The second stage consisted of developing an extension day in response to the concerns reflected in the PRA. According to the results, the participants identify as the main problems: water contamination, lack of training, the absence of medical centers, and the minimal access to markets to obtain a better price for their production. Plantain cultivation is the essential item in the study area, so the training provided aimed to strengthen such crop agronomic management. In conclusion, PRA allowed identifying the Embera communities' main problems, which reaffirms the need for participatory and multiple approaches. The possible solutions to be proposed will be oriented to society's demands and contribute to the livelihood components of sustainability.
