Abstract

Information on abundance and species richness of bats observed in several locations of the central region of Panama, specifically in the provinces of Colon, Cocle and Panama is presented. Surveys in four sites near Rio Indio, two sites in Rio Cano Sucio and eight sites in the Cocle del Norte basin were carried out from May 2001 through April 2002. Bats were caught with mist nets placed at 0.5 m over the ground and then released after data were recorded. Information from 1,532 individuals within 40 species was obtained which represents 35% of the total number of species found in the whole country. In locations near to Rio Indio 24 species of bats were captured; 16 were registered in Rio Cano Sucio and 35 species were recorded in Rio Cocle del Norte. The most abundant species were Carollia perspicillata, Artibeus jamaicensis, A. phaoeotis, and A. lituratus. These species represent 67% of the total captures. The common vampire, Desmodus rotundus was particularly abundant in the region of Rio Indio.
