Abstract

Moths (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) constitute the four-largest order of Hexapoda in terms of global diversity. The total number of butterflies and moths’ species described in the world exceeds 160,000, of which 86. 9% are moths, and 13.07% are butterflies in an 8:1 ratio.  In contrast, the few studies of the group are mainly restricted to species of economic interest associated with crops or forest species.  However, the species that inhabit the different protected areas of the country, in many cases, are unknown, such as the case of Recreational Area Lago Gatún. Hence, this research documents the richness of nocturnal butterflies (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) present in the Recreational Area Lago Gatun. For this purpose, 1.20 watt LED light traps were used, placed in two points of the Gatun Lake Recreation Area; at each point, the sampling was carried out during the new moon phase, between 18:00 and 23:00 hours. Eighty-four species of moths belonging to 13 macromoths are listed: Pyralidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae, Erebidae, Saturniidae, Limacodidae, Megalopygidae, Bombycidae, Uraniidae, Dalceridae, y Notodontide.
