Abstract

In this study, the effect of habituation to human interaction on reactivity, animal welfare and reproductive efficiency in Simbrah heifers was evaluated. It was held at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Panama. Sixteen animals were randomly divided into two groups: Heifers accustomed to human interaction (CH; n = 9), with an age of 19 ± 0.8 months, body condition of 3.1 ± 0.1 and weight of 358.6 ± 10.8 kg. The control group or heifers not accustomed to human interaction (SH; n = 7), made up of animals with 20.1 ± 1.5 months, body condition of 3.11 ± 0.09 and weight of 364 ± 19.16 kg. The data were analyzed with the statistical program R version 4.0.4 using a generalized linear model. The results indicate that there were significant differences in reactivity between the group of CH and SH heifers (p <0.001) and time (p = 0.001). In general, the heifers accustomed (CH) and without habituation (SH) to human interaction had a score in the containment gap of 1.12 ± 0.08 and 2.75 ± 0.43 respectively (p = 0.001). At day ten the CH and SH animals showed a reactivity of 1.12 ± 0.12 and 3.5 ± 0.46 respectively (p = 0.001). Regarding the physiological indicators, the CH group presented a lower heart rate with respect to the SH group (64.38 ± 2.42 vs 73.31 ± 2.65 LC / min; p = 0.03). However, there were no differences in vaginal temperature (p> 0.05). In the group of CH and SH heifers the conception rate was [(55% and 43% respectively ?21 = 2.88; p = 0.08). In conclusion, the results support the hypothesis that habituation to human interaction had a positive effect on reactivity, lower heart rate and better reproductive performance in Simbrah heifers.
