Abstract

Onion cultivation is one of the vegetables with the largest planted area in Panama. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the climatic influence during the rainy season on the morphological and productive development of five onion cultivars (Allium cepa). This research took place at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Panama in the province of Chiriquí, from July to November of the year 2022. The statistical design used in the trial was completely randomized blocks, with four replicates and five treatments consisting of five onion hybrids: Alvara, E 515 F1, Gamay, Campo Lindo and Ultra F1. The variables evaluated were phenology, average bulb diameter and weight, weight per plot, plant height, pseudo stem diameter, number of leaves, root length, characterization of the plant and the bulb, correlations between climatic and morphological variables. Variability of phenology and morphology were observed among cultivars. The highest weight per plot was reflected by Gamay with 3.69 kg/3.0 m2, no differing from the rest of cultivars but E 515 F1. Correlation analysis shown that temperature and precipitation had a negative influenced on morphological development of each cultivar, while radiation had a positive one.
