Academic decisions when choosing a university career are currently a great challenge for young university students, considering that their future employment will depend on it. In this research, the problem of decision making in the selection of a university career in the educational environment of the engineering faculty of the University of Panama was approached.
The aim of this study is to describe the decision making in the determination of the academic career of a student of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Panama, a descriptive cross-sectional study during the period February-March 2022. An electronic questionnaire consisting of 12 open and closed questions was used for data collection, which was designed for this research and validated by 2 experts in psychology.
Outcomes: 57.1% of the study subjects reported that their decision-making process to choose a career was good; however, 61.9% answered that they did not receive vocational guidance in their school of origin.
Conclusion: This study reflects a marked deficit in the orientation that students receive in their schools of origin, which makes the decision-making process more difficult when choosing an academic career.
