Abstract

With the objective of studying the life cycle of Epilachna abrupta 1897 Gorham (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae), observations were made in the field from June 27 to July 3, 2017. The beetles were located in a five kilometer transect on six shrubs of Solanum torvum SW. 1788 (Solanaceae). This plant is the known host and food plant for both larvae and adult of this species of beetle. Each S. torvum shrub contained more than two samples of the three larval stages (egg, larva, and pupa). Three aggregates were selected by stages of the six selected shrubs, making a total, by stages as follows: Egg (n= 720), larva I (n= 420); larva II (n= 389); larva III (n= 375); larva IV (n= 352) and pupa (n= 345). The development of 2601 total individuals, distributed among 6 S. torvum shrubs, was observed. Observations were made of the growth and development duration of three immature stages of E. abrupta. The observations were terminated when the insects reached the adult stage. The ovipositing of E. abrupta averaged 60-65 ± eggs per female, with the total varying between 2 and 10 eggs. Each female averaged 3 oviposits totaling about 180 eggs. The total eggs observed was 720 (by 12 ± ovipostings), of which 420 were viable. The average duration of each instar was: Eggs were 7 days; Stage I was 5 days; state II was 4 days; stage III was 4 days; stage IV was 12 days; Pupa stage was 8 days. In conclusion, we can say that the lifecycle of E. abrupta, that is to say, the period between ovipositing of the egg until the emergence of the adult had an average duration of 40 days, varying from 38 to 42 days.
