Abstract

The aim of the study was to develop a systematic review on the importance of environmental education in the comprehensive formation of elementary students. The research was analytical and reflective in nature, consulting 40 references related to the topic, published mainly during the last 10 years. The following were established as thematic axes: i) Influence of environmental education on the attitudes and behaviors of students; ii) Pedagogical principles synergistic with environmental education; iii) Environmental education depending on the territory; iv) Programs and methodological strategies applied in environmental education, as part of the curriculum. According to the analysis, to the extent that elementary students consolidate habits, attitudes and values ??oriented towards the environment protection, they become multiplying entities of society, through family and community coexistence. Regarding pedagogical strengthening, having a healthy environment makes it easier for participants in the teaching-learning process to be able to apply the contents in response pertinent to the reality with which they interact. If nations reinforce environmental sustainability as a priority within their State policies, this will facilitate the economic, scientific and logistical support of formal educational proposals, oriented towards this end. On the other hand, it is necessary to have adjusted indicators that allow evaluating the effectiveness of the environmental education programs that are being implemented. In conclusion, environmental education is a fundamental constituent for the integral formation of the human being, especially at an early age.
